English Courses

You will take intensive English courses through the Applied English Center.  The AEC is dedicated to helping students whose first language is not English make a smooth transition to regular, full-time coursework at the University of Kansas. All incoming students whose native language is not English are required to take an English proficiency test before arriving on campus. Based upon the results of your exam, you may be required to take coursework at the Applied English Center to help improve your command of English.

Progression through the AEC is determined by the successful completion of student learning outcomes for each course. The length of time you study at the AEC depends upon your level of English when you arrive, the speed at which you learn, and your willingness to study hard. All Kansai students enroll in two English classes during the spring semester. After that, some students move into regular KU classes for the summer and fall. Most students enroll in AEC courses during summer semester and KU classes in the fall. Some students may be full-time AEC students in the summer and part-time AEC students in the fall. Everyone should get to take at least one KU course during the fall semester.

Work Experience Course

Students will all be enrolled in a summer course to help them make the most of their U.S. Volunteer Work Experience. Class learning, activities, and assignments in the class may include: reflections on students’ experiences at their host location/s, the culture of the U.S. world of work, preparing U.S. style job application materials, and perhaps event mock job interviews.

KU Courses

All Kansai students will have the opportunity to enroll in one to five regular KU courses during their time at the University of Kansas. Students may choose from a list of courses in linguistics, communications, history, American Studies, and other fields that have been pre-approved by Kansai University for easy transfer to students’ program of studies at home.
